I hope everyone had a great weekend and hopefully some of you were able to make it out to the Texas State Fair. There is a lot going on in the next few weeks here at cannon. Some things to be looking forward to are:
THOUGHTEXCHANGE
GCISD wants to hear from you about the direction of the school district. Since the implementation of GCISD's strategic plan, LEAD 2021, the district has begun a major transformation. LEAD 2021 priorities have led to arena scheduling, iUniversity Prep, student engagement, a learning platform rubric, two-way dual language, STEM, Portrait of a Graduate, 1:1 technology and many more new and innovative programs. Where do we go when LEAD 2021 draws to a close in five years? That's where you come in by participating in our online conversation about GCISD in Thoughtexchange. Sign up for the completely anonymous process at this link through October 12. First you'll share your thoughts about the district and in a later conversation you'll be able to read the thoughts of others in the district and star those that align with your opinions.
VISION & HEARING SCREENINGS THIS WEEK
Hearing & vision screenings will be done at school this week for all students in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th graders. These will be done on Wednesday October 12th, so if you child wears glasses, please make sure they bring their glasses to school that day. Many thanks!
GCISD HOSTS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR PARENTS
Parents - if you are interested in joining the inaugural GCISD Leadership Academy, please complete this application. The district will begin accepting applications on Tuesday, October 4 at 12 p.m. and will continue accepting applications through Sunday, October 16 at midnight. Once you complete the application, please send to communication.services@gcisd.net. & more!!
Storybook Pumpkin Contest
Cannon Library is hosting a Storybook Pumpkin Challenge for any scholar who would like to enter. At home, families can decorate a pumpkin as their favorite book character, and scholars can bring their decorated pumpkin to the library beginning Monday, October 24, 2016. More information will be coming home this week about this fun family challenge!
Red Ribbon Week
Mandy Coburn, Cannon's counselor, has created a newsletter for Cannon parents, to keep everyone informed about guidance lessons she is teaching in K-5 classrooms, Rachel's Challenge efforts at Cannon and our plans for Red Ribbon Week, October 24-28. What's Happening in Grapevine?
Butterfly Flutterby - Grapevine Botanical Gardens, 411 Ball St., Grapevine, Tx
October 15, 2016 - Bring the entire family, even your pets, to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterfly from Canada to Mexico by way of Grapevine. The 19th Annual Butterfly Flutterby is a free, family-friendly event and will be held at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. Butterfly Releases will take place at 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. There will be many Cannon students who will have their butterfly artwork on display at this event!!
Fall Round-Up at Nash Farm - Nash Farm, 626 Ball St.
October 15, 2016 - Experience life on the farm at the 16th Annual Fall Round-Up at Grapevine's historic Nash Farm, 626 Ball St. Admission is free but some activities require a participation fee. Activities at the 16th Annual Fall Round-Up include kitchen gardening, live music, farm animals, blacksmith and wood carving demonstrations, cotton picking, heritage toys, heritage games, wood-burning stove cooking demonstrations, petting zoo and more.
UTA Engineering Saturdays - UTA in Arlington
What's an Engineering Saturday? It's a great outreach program from UTA's College of Engineering that offers Saturday fun and hands-on engineering activities for K-12 students. The remaining Engineering Saturday dates are: November 19th & April 8th

Mark your calendars for the Cannon Cub Dash on October 28th!!
Be sure to check your child's take-home folder for information about the upcoming Cub Dash! The Cub Dash is an online pledge based Run-a-Thon that makes fundraising fun and healthy for the kids! More information is going home with all students soon!
All students will receive a T-Shirt from PTA for this event and those who sign up and help raise money for the school will be rewarded with special gifts and incentives!

Our PTA will kick off this FUNdraiser at our Friday Assembly on October 14th. This "Fun Run", called the Cub Dash will be done during grade level specials on October 28th. On that date, all students will participate in a fun and safe obstacle course set up on the playground.

PTA is seeking parent volunteers for this event to come help supervise and facilitate all of the fun activities planned for students during their Specials time on 10/28. Please help communicate this need through all of your parent communications.

Reflections Contest
The Reflections program recognizes students at the Local, Council/Region, State and National PTA levels. At each level, all entries are judged on interpretation of the theme, creativity and artistic merit. For more information, visit www.txpta.com/reflections and information will be sent home in backpacks soon!
The Reflections program is open to all Texas students who meet the necessary requirements below:
1. Students must attend a school with a Local PTA/PTSA which achievesActive Status no later than October 31; or students must attend a school which is defined within the service area of a community-based Local PTA/PTSA which achieves Active Status no later than October 31. (DONE!!!)
2. The student or at least one person from their primary household must be a current member of the Local PTA/PTSA where the student is participating. Each Local PTA/PTSA may determine a date by which the member must join. (HAVE YOU JOINED???)
