Finding Value in Math

This past week you scholar was challenged to find a number that was one tenth of the value of a given number.  While it was a difficult task, it wasn't impossible. To solve a problem like this a few volunteers each took a digit from the existing number and stood in the place value that each digit could have been found in the original number (I think that the number pictured here was 570.) Next the scholars discussed the relationships between the place values. Because we knew that each place value is ten times the value of the one before it and 1/10 as much as the one below it,  we decided to move each digit down one place value making the number 57,which is one tenth as much.

We didn't stop there, we continued the week by practicing this and other place value concepts.  Here is a picture of scholar's from Ms. Jacobson's class as they used cards to practice their Place Value skills.
